This went on the market and did very well.

By now, however, both founders had been ousted and Roche, the visionary, had died. Despite the company’s success, many of the surviving employees didn’t know they had a computer until their customers started writing programs for it. (Really.) Indeed, a guy in Denmark, Klavs Landberg, wrote a simple and clean operating system for it. They hired him.

Now Datapoint was in the desktop computer business. as its founder Gus Roche had intended. But they had backed into it. propelled unwittingly by Roche’s vision as if pushed backward into a chair.

Fabulous success followed, as they developed an excellent software line with robust database search and an excellent local area network. By 1981 the Datapoint line was the most effective office computer system.

Datapoint’s ARCnet, a LAN that was on the market early, offered easy connection between machines. Their IEOS (Integrated Electronic Office System) combined word processing, database, spreadsheet and relatively easy user programmability. Given that these were the main concepts of the time, their stuff was the best.

There was a scandal: the sales department had an unfortunate practice of paying the salesman when delivery was made, even if a unit was later returned. This led to salesmen placing a lot of units on approval, later to be returned. This led to false sales reports which were later disreported, which did the company no good. (Management thought the problem was “quality control” because taco sauce had been found on delivered units.) But this wasn’t the real problem at all.
